Preserving Our River, Protecting Our Future.

Water Quality Monitoring

Our Water Quality Monitoring project is a vital part of preserving the health of the St. John / Wolastoq River. Spanning over 100 kilometers, this initiative involves regular testing at key locations along the river, including heritage steamboat wharves. We monitor indicators like E. coli levels to ensure the water remains safe for recreational use and ecological health. Funded by the New Brunswick Environmental Trust Fund, this ongoing effort helps identify areas for improvement and ensures the river continues to be a vibrant and clean resource for all.

Water Quality Monitoring

Protecting the Lifeblood of Our River

Our Water Quality Monitoring program is a cornerstone of the St. John River Society's efforts to preserve the health and vitality of the Wolastoq / St. John River. By regularly testing and analyzing water samples from key locations along the river, we ensure that the water remains safe for wildlife, recreational use, and the communities that rely on it. This initiative also helps us identify potential environmental threats, such as bacterial contamination or nutrient pollution, and enables us to take proactive steps to mitigate these risks.

Key Aspects of Our Water Quality Monitoring Program:

  • Regular Testing: Monthly sampling from multiple sites along the river, covering over 100 kilometers of its course.

  • E. Coli Monitoring: Measuring E. Coli levels to ensure they meet Health Canada standards, protecting both human health and aquatic ecosystems.

  • Data-Driven Action: Using data to identify trends, potential contamination sources, and areas requiring intervention or restoration.

  • Community Engagement: Encouraging public involvement in reporting water quality issues and raising awareness about the importance of clean water.

  • Collaborative Effort: Partnering with local organizations, government agencies, and academic institutions to enhance the reach and impact of our monitoring efforts.

  • Funding and Support: This project is supported by the New Brunswick Environmental Trust Fund, enabling us to continue our vital work in protecting the river.

Why we monitor

E. Coli Monitoring

Regular testing of E. Coli levels in water bodies is crucial because high levels can indicate contamination by fecal matter, which poses serious health risks for both humans and wildlife. Our monitoring helps ensure that water in the Wolastoq / St. John River meets Health Canada’s safety standards, making it safe for recreational use.

Nutrient Monitoring

Excess nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, can lead to algal blooms that deplete oxygen in the water, harming fish and other aquatic life. Through our water quality monitoring, we track nutrient levels and work to prevent these harmful effects, safeguarding the river’s biodiversity.

Community Reporting

Public involvement is key to successful water quality management. By encouraging community members to report issues like discolored water or unusual smells, we can quickly address potential threats to the river’s health, ensuring it remains a clean and vibrant ecosystem for all to enjoy.

Beauty blooms in the heart as well as garden.
