Watershed Technician

May/June – August 2025 (2-4 Positions)

The St. John River Society is looking for motivated candidates to fill 2-4 seasonal Watershed Technician positions. The technicians will assist with providing technical support to the SJRS’s field and office-based projects, including water quality monitoring and research, aquatic assessment, tree planting, heritage wharf maintenance and wake aware community outreach projects.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Aquatic monitoring (collecting water quality data, installing temperature loggers)
  • Cyanobacteria monitoring and testing (collecting samples for analysis, photos, and other data)
  • Physical restoration work (tree planting, willow staking, bank restoration).
  • Wake Aware public education and outreach programs (workshops, events, marina Visits, information booths, life at the lakes).
  • Wharf Maintenance (mowing, picking up rubbish, assessing condition, etc.)
  • Field work in various weather conditions (rain, heat, cold) and terrain (forest, field, Belleisle Bay, and watercourses).
  • Data entry on field sheets and computer.
  • Assisting in report writing, data entry, social media, and other documentation.
  • Other office and field work, as required.

 

Qualifications:

  • Available to work in the lower St. John (Wolastoq) River Valley area full-time.
  • enrolled/completed a university degree/technical college diploma in the environmental, biology, or forestry field.
  • Be 15 to 30 years of age to qualify for funding.
  • Exceptional written, technical reporting and communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, computer/mathematical models, Excel, SPSS or R and social media tools.
  • Positive and enthusiastic attitude, willingness to learn and the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships in a team environment.
  • Enjoys working outdoors, in all weather conditions, as up to 90% of the work is field based.
  • Experience with boats and comfortable working around/in the water.
  • Class 5 New Brunswick Driver’s License.
  • asset knowledge, Water quality sampling training, CABIN training, Electro-fishing certification.
  • Own personal transportation to Fredericton and field sites.

 

Compensation:

These are full-time seasonal positions with a wage of $16.50/hour. A standard work week is Monday to Friday, 8:30-4:30 (37.5 hours per week), with occasional evenings and weekends as events arise. Positions starting in May/early June.
