Be Wake Aware

The Be Wake Aware campaign is dedicated to promoting responsible boating practices on the St. John / Wolastoq River. This initiative educates boaters about the environmental impact of boat wake and propeller wash, which can cause shoreline erosion, disturb wildlife habitats, and spread invasive species like milfoil. Through community engagement, informative signage, and outreach efforts, we aim to raise awareness and encourage boaters to slow down near sensitive areas, helping to protect the river's ecological health for future generations.

Water Quality Monitoring

Our Water Quality Monitoring project is a vital part of preserving the health of the St. John / Wolastoq River. Spanning over 100 kilometers, this initiative involves regular testing at key locations along the river, including heritage steamboat wharves. We monitor indicators like E. coli levels to ensure the water remains safe for recreational use and ecological health. Funded by the New Brunswick Environmental Trust Fund, this ongoing effort helps identify areas for improvement and ensures the river continues to be a vibrant and clean resource for all.

Wharf Restoration Project

The Wharf Restoration Project is a key initiative by the St. John River Society to preserve and enhance access to the historic wharves along the St. John / Wolastoq River. With significant funding secured, including contributions from federal and provincial sources, this project focuses on repairing and maintaining these vital structures, ensuring they remain safe and accessible for community use.

History

War of 1812 and the March of the 104th (New Brunswick) Regiment by Foot

During the summer of 1812, the British held their ground along the Niagara frontier, but by spring 1813, the Americans were planning a major offensive. The British urgently needed reinforcements, typically sent by sea via the St. Lawrence River, but winter ice made this impossible until April—too late for the campaign. With the Maritimes relatively quiet, the 104th Regiment of Foot was ordered to march from Fredericton, N.B., to Kingston, Ontario. Starting on February 16, 1813, 554 men endured one of the harshest winters on record, reaching Kingston on April 12.
