Be Responsible

Be Wake Aware with St John River Society!

Project detail are below the video! Check it out!

Our “Be Wake Aware” campaign is dedicated to educating the boating community about the environmental impact of boat wake on the Wolastoq / St. John River. Excessive boat wake can cause significant shoreline erosion, disturb sensitive wildlife habitats, and spread invasive species like milfoil through propeller wash. Our campaign aims to raise awareness of these issues and encourage boaters to adopt more responsible practices to help protect our river’s fragile ecosystem.

By promoting mindful boating, we hope to preserve the natural beauty and ecological diversity of the Wolastoq / St. John River for future generations. Through community outreach, educational materials, and collaborative efforts with local stakeholders, “Be Wake Aware” emphasizes the importance of reducing wake near vulnerable shorelines, keeping a safe distance from the shore, and being aware of the impact our actions have on the river’s health. Together, we can ensure that this cherished waterway remains a vibrant and thriving environment for all.

Why it matters

The "Be Wake Aware" campaign benefits the environment in several key ways

  • Prevents Shoreline Erosion: Reducing boat wake minimizes the erosion of riverbanks, protecting the natural landscape and preventing the loss of valuable habitats for plants and animals.

  • Protects Wildlife Habitats: Calm waters help maintain the integrity of sensitive wildlife habitats, ensuring that species relying on these areas for breeding, feeding, and shelter remain undisturbed.

  • Limits Spread of Invasive Species: By encouraging boaters to reduce wake and propwash, the campaign helps prevent the spread of invasive species like milfoil, which can be dispersed by fast-moving water and propeller action.

  • Preserves Water Quality: Lowering boat speeds near shorelines reduces sediment disturbance, which can otherwise degrade water quality and harm aquatic life.

  • Supports Biodiversity: By protecting the diverse ecosystems within the Wolastoq / St. John River, the campaign helps maintain the region’s rich biodiversity, ensuring that native species thrive.

  • Reduces Impact on Vulnerable Shorelines: Some areas of the river are particularly susceptible to damage from boat wake. Raising awareness about these areas helps protect them from further degradation.

  • Promotes Sustainable Recreation: Encouraging mindful boating practices ensures that the river can be enjoyed by future generations without compromising its environmental health.
